Irish Derby Day at the Curragh sponsored by Dubai Duty Free is the pinnacle of the Irish Flat Racing Season. This year I teamed up with Ger Hennessy Hats and Fascinators for the occasion. Ger Hennessy is a well known and established hair dresser and has been practicing her trade for over 20 years. In 2012 Ger branched out and now operates a hat and fascinator hire company.
Located in Kilworth above her salon, her hat studio is decorated in bright neutral colours with various hat styles and colours lining the walls. Tea and coffee is served on arrival before Ger brings you to view the hat collection. Here you are left to your own devices, taking it all in, feeling no pressure to choose straight away. However, Ger is there if you need some expert advice. I would recommend bringing your outfit choices and making an appointment in advance to benefit fully from the service. For the Irish Derby I opted for this plain navy dress and a beautiful green hat. I wanted to keep my outfit simple and let the hat do the talking. I teamed it with navy accessories and gold jewellery. Before our appointment we had some time to spare and we stopped of in a little cafe in Kilworth called the Brush & Spoon, where I had this delicious scone and latte.
Ger is contactable through her Facebook page and if you describe or send a picture of your outfit she will send you back pictures of some options. It cost €25.00 to hire across the board and to buy the hats are priced accordingly. The pricing is extremely reasonable, overall this is a great service and finding a hat for the Irish Derby couldn’t have been made simpler. This service would also be ideal for weddings as you could pick your head piece and book in for an up-style, getting your head piece fitted at the same time.
This year the Irish Derby was won by the Dermot Weld trained Harzand, it was great to have an Irish trained winner of this historic race. The weather stayed fine and an enjoyable day was had by all. See below a picture of the best dressed lady finalists.
