My Secrets to Exercise Motivation

When I first began writing this post, I thought about titling it ‘Getting Fit’ but everyone has a rough idea of how to do this. Start running, join a gym, attend fitness classes etc. However, I have done all of the above and yes while I have enjoyed them to a certain extent I have never stuck at it. I would purchase a gym membership and go diligently every day for about two weeks before it would fizzle out. I know there are lots of people out there fully dedicated to getting and staying fit, and I salute you. However, if you’re like me and found the quest to exercising consistently tough work keep reading. Here are some tips that I found useful in helping me to get fit and also to sticking to it.

Exercise With Friends
This is my number one rule. I was never a good runner…ever! A lot of my friends run and would always ask me to come along and I never would because I thought I was so bad. But one day I bit the bullet and went for it and while it was tough it was not half as bad as I thought it would be. Once you get into the habit of exercising with a friend it keeps you committed as you don’t want to let them down when you have organised to go. It’s also a good excuse for a gossip and catch up.

Set Yourself Goals
Setting goals is another good one as you know you have to train to be ready for whatever activity you are taking part in. This year I ran a 10k in Mount Juliet for the Jack & Jill Foundation, 5k Lust for Life, and Darkness into Light. Such events give you a sense of achievement and if they’re for charity it is an added bonus. You usually get a t-shirt too!

Reap The Rewards
Since I started exercising frequently I feel much more productive and have more energy. Not to mention my skin feels in better condition and your overall physique improves. These might only be little changes but they’re good enough for me!

Take Time Off
Now I’m not trying to contradict what I have already said, but if some days you couldn’t think of anything worse than going for a run etc. then don’t! By doing this you will only sicken yourself and you might not go back to it. Everything in moderation!

Sports Wear
This is a little bit of a guilty pleasure and it can also take its toll on the bank balance. But I often find a new addition to my sportswear collection provides untold motivation. See some of my top picks below.
